Semiotics is the study of signs and their meaning in society. A sign is something which can stand for something else – in other words, a sign is anything that can convey meaning.
Icon- The signifier is perceived as resembling or impersonating those which signifies. For example a photograph signifies a particular object.
Index- An index has either factual or casual connections. For example leaves moving suggest it is windy.
Symbol- Is something which is developed overtime and is something which is later agreed upon. For example the letters "BOAT" doesn't have to represent a boat but it is easiest to remember in this form.
Metasymbol- This is a code of a one-to-one relationship which transcends from cultural as well as historical meaning for example the dove is a sign of peace.
Connotes- Imply or suggest in addition to the literal or primary meaning
